Police Summon: Sowore Storms Force Hqrs with Travel Bag, Toothpaste, Soap

Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore arrived at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, carrying a travel bag packed with personal essentials, including toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, clothing, and books, in response to a summons from the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit. The symbolic gesture signaled his readiness for potential detention amid an investigation triggered by a petition alleging forgery and criminal defamation.

The police issued the summons in a letter dated August 5, 2025, prompting Sowore to vow on Tuesday to attend the meeting “with a full house.” He called on “revolutionary comrades, citizens of conscience, and voices of resistance” to join him in solidarity. Arriving at 12:16 p.m., Sowore was accompanied by his lawyers, A.K. Musa and Marshal Abubakar, and a large group of supporters who chanted anti-government slogans and songs critical of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

The activist’s dramatic entrance with a packed travel bag underscored his defiance and preparedness for any outcome, drawing significant attention to the ongoing probe. The Nigeria Police Force has yet to disclose further details about the petition or the investigation, and no official statement has been released following Sowore’s appearance at the headquarters. The event has sparked widespread discussion, with supporters rallying behind Sowore, citing concerns over freedom of expression and political persecution. Further developments are expected as the investigation unfolds.
