TikTok Bans Influencers Over Human Trafficking Scheme Promotion

TikTok has banned the accounts of several influencers, including popular content creator Cyan Boujee, after they promoted a suspicious programme now under investigation for human trafficking.

The influencers, led by Cyan Boujee, came under heavy criticism for endorsing the scheme, which promised to relocate young women to Tatarstan, Russia, to work and study.

Concerns grew after it was revealed that Interpol is investigating the programme for possible links to human trafficking and alleged involvement in producing drones used in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The incident has raised serious questions about the responsibility of influencers when promoting opportunities to their followers. While many rely on paid partnerships, critics argue that influencers must verify programmes before encouraging their often young and vulnerable audiences to take part.

TikTok has since removed the accounts involved and reiterated its stance against content that promotes harmful or exploitative activities.
