On September 1st, Jefferson County officials were alerted to a possible homicide. The information included the name of John Wesley Finney (51 years old) with the victim being his wife, Amy Jo Finney, 42 years old. A vehicle description was provided as well.
It is alleged that "Wes" Finney was spotted by a Christopher Illinois officer at 9:00 p.m., last night, traveling near highway 14 and highway 148. He was eventually pulled over near DuQuoin, Illinois.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Department and the Christopher Police Department ultimately conducted a felony stop on the vehicle near rural DuQuoin near Birch Road.
Sadly, during the search of the vehicle they did find the remains of Finney's wife.
The victim's best friend has reached out to us and would like to share some information with the public on behalf of her best friend who is an apparent victim of homicide.
She stated that yesterday at 7:30 a.m. in the morning, the day that Amy was fatally shot, Amy called her very upset about her husband. The pair allegedly had an argument about Wes being intoxicated so early in the morning with his friend.
Her best friend has provided screenshots of their conversations.
On Sunday night, Amy had reached out to the same best friend and stated that Wes was out of control and she asked her best friend to try to speak to Wes to calm him down.
The friend shared, "not too long ago at all, Wes had burned her clothing and she called the police. They did respond but nothing was really done about it. The police were called frequently during their arguments; many times for Amy's safety. Amy was suffering from a chronic illness and it is devastating to find out that she was shot and killed in cold blood. Amy had five children and grandchildren that she adored. We are all grieving. Amy did not deserve to be stuffed in a trunk. Amy didn't deserve any of this. Amy always reached out to me asking for help and I did everything I could do, and so did other people."
Jefferson County Sheriff's Department stated that the crime occurred at the Finney's residence. Amy died as a result of a gunshot wound that she suffered at her residence- 7561 North Illinois highway 148 in Jefferson County.
John Wesley Finney is being held on charges for first degree murder in the Jefferson County Jail.
Amy's best friend is asking for prayers from the community at this time and she wants her best friend remembered for the good woman that she was. "Amy loved to joke around. She was really funny. She was also very sweet," her best friend added.
She concluded the interview by saying, "I always worried that he would do something like this but I can't believe he actually did it."
Amy had been looking for a liver donor and her best friend was getting ready to donate part of her liver to give Amy a second chance of life. I read the messages where Amy found out that her and her best friend were a match and she was ecstatic. She was completely overwhelmed with happiness.
Our thoughts are with Amy Jo Finney's family and everyone who loved her. Our thoughts are also with the community at this time.
