Songwriter Brett James killed in North Carolina plane crash

Grammy-winning country songwriter Brett James, known for hits including “Jesus, Take the Wheel” and “When the Sun Goes Down,” died Thursday in a plane crash in Franklin, North Carolina, along with two others.

Macon County officials said a single-engine airplane went down near an elementary school around 3 p.m., and there were no survivors. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed three people were on board. James, 57, whose full name is Brett James Cornelius, was listed among the victims by the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. The plane was registered to Brett Cornelius of Brentwood, Tennessee.

A native of Columbia, Missouri, James left medical school to pursue music and initially aimed to be a recording artist before finding success as a songwriter. His catalogue includes more than 300 major-label songs, including Kenny Chesney and Uncle Kracker’s “When the Sun Goes Down,” Rascal Flatts’ “Summer Nights,” and Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” which won the 2006 Grammy for Best Country Song.

James also collaborated with Taylor Swift and Bon Jovi and was named ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year in 2006 and 2010. The identities of the other two people on the plane have not been released.
