Chicago police arrest suspected Tren de Aragua cartel members in operation
About 300 federal officers and agents from multiple agencies carried out a major raid early Tuesday on a South Side Chicago apartment building, targeting suspected members of the Tren de Aragua prison gang, which officials say has been terrorizing residents and running criminal operations in the area. The operation, part of the ongoing Operation Midway Blitz, involved officers rappelling from Black Hawk helicopters to secure the building perimeter before entering after gang members refused to open the doors.
Preliminary reports indicate that at least 30 immigrants in the country illegally were arrested during the raid. Agencies involved included the U.S. Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Some U.S. citizens were temporarily detained as part of standard safety protocols during the operation. U.S. Border Patrol commander-at-large Gregory Bovino, who is overseeing the enforcement efforts, described the operation as proceeding “very smoothly” and said residents can expect an increased federal presence in the South Side neighborhoods. Local officials, including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, criticized the operation, alleging intimidation of residents and misuse of federal power. Community groups also condemned the raid as a further militarization of Black neighborhoods, while federal officials, including Bovino, defended the effort as necessary to combat gang violence and maintain public safety.
