White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced Tuesday in Japan that the country’s new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, plans to nominate President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
It is not yet clear whether Takaichi’s nomination will cite a specific accomplishment. Trump previously claimed in 2019 that the late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had nominated him for the award. Leavitt’s announcement comes amid a wave of international figures and Republican lawmakers who have publicly put forward Trump’s name for the prize in recent years, seeking to bolster his image as a global peacemaker.
Speaking to U.S. troops in Japan on Tuesday, Trump joked that a forceful military statement he had made could harm his Nobel chances. “That’s a terrible statement for me to make,” he said. “Everybody said that I should immediately get the Nobel Peace Award. With that statement, that takes me out of the run.”
Other leaders from countries including Cambodia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, and Israel have also nominated Trump for the award this year. Despite these efforts, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prize this year to Venezuelan opposition leader MarÃa Corina Machado for her work promoting democratic rights.
Trump met with Takaichi in Tokyo on Tuesday, exchanging mutual praise. “Anything I can do to help Japan, we will be there,” Trump said. Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, invoked her former mentor Abe in commending Trump. “Prime Minister Abe often told me about your dynamic diplomacy,” she said.
