BENUE GOES BIG! $15 MILLION CULTURE FUND LAUNCHED AS IDOMA PEOPLE DECLARE ANNUAL CULTURAL DAY

Benue State just made history! The government has unveiled a whopping $15 million fund to turbocharge arts, tourism, and culture. The announcement came hot off the press during the 2025 Idoma International Carnival in Otukpo, delivered by Shadrach Ukuma, the state’s top arts and culture boss.

And that’s not all. The Paramount ruler of the Idoma people, His Royal Majesty Och’Idoma Agabaidu, Elaigwu Odogbo, has declared December 23 as Idoma Cultural Day, making it an annual celebration of heritage, pride, and identity.

“This day will be celebrated at the Och’Idoma Palace every December 23,” Odogbo declared. “By unity, focus, and purpose, we will achieve this dream!” The monarch also revealed plans to upgrade the palace square to international standards—a bold step to make Idoma culture shine globally.

Odogbo stressed the importance of food in culture, highlighting the famous Okoho soup as a symbol of Idoma culinary greatness. He also announced a unification of all cultural titles under Ochetoha Ki’Idoma, saying, “Many expressions, one Idoma soul.”

Carnival convener Edwin Ochai hailed the declaration as timely, adding that the celebration could help fight youth restiveness and create jobs through culture and tourism.

Representing Governor Hyacinth Alia, the Director-General of the State Bureau for Arts, Culture, and Tourism said the carnival is more than fun—it’s a bold affirmation of who the Idoma people are, with music, dance, stories, festivals, and crafts that have survived generations.

With the $15 million culture fund and the new Idoma Cultural Day, Benue is stepping onto the global stage, sending a loud, proud message: Idoma culture is alive, thriving, and unstoppable!.
