Of a total 53 deaths recorded, 25 people died due to a cholera outbreak, the agency said, while six others died from anemia and other complications related to malnutrition, it said. The U.N. said it was working with the health ministry and other partners to investigate the cause of the other deaths.  Press Release:

Every Hisbah Officer Is a Peace and Security Ambassador in His Community.

Kano State Governor Alh.Abba Kabir Yusuf has reaffirmed the determination of his administration to ensure security and peace  for the protection of lives and property across the state.

The Governor, represented by the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Sani Auwal, made the commitment during a stakeholders meeting on the contribution of shari'a sector institutions toward promoting peace and security in Kano State. The meeting was organized by the Kano State Hisbah Board and held at the Coronation hall Government House, Kano.

He emphasized that security is a collective responsibility and urged the Hisbah Board to focus more on providing intelligence reports to conventional security agencies, rather than limiting efforts to moral enforcement alone.

The Governor also called on the Zakkat and Endowment Commission to develop a structured system for collecting zakkat from wealthy individuals, while assuring that the government will support the commission in aggregating and distributing it to the needy. He noted that this would significantly reduce hardship, especially among youths, and prevent them from falling into criminal activities or extremist groups.

Governor Yusuf further explained that the government is considering increasing the allowances of Hisbah personnel and providing them with improved working tools to enhance their effectiveness. He called on the public to intensify prayers for peace and stability in Kano State and Nigeria at large.

In his remarks, the Commander General of the Hisbah Board, Sheikh (Dr.) Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, said Kano is blessed with numerous assets that some people fail to appreciate. He urged the public to support the Hisbah Board through cooperation, prayers, vigilance, and reporting suspicious activities to address the ongoing security challenges.

Delivering their separate goodwill messages, representatives of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori ACP Jamilu Muhammad, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mal. Bello Dahiru, stated that their agencies were established to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens, which aligns with Hisbah’s mandate of promoting good conduct, discouraging misconduct, and assisting security agencies in maintaining peace. They stressed that sustainable peace cannot be achieved without justice, and called on the public to share credible intelligence with security agencies.

Earlier, Professor Ibrahim Mu’azzam Maibushira explained that Islamic justice revolves around protecting five essential values: religion, life, intellect, property, and lineage. He challenged those advocating for the dissolution of Islamic legal institutions and the Hisbah Board, saying that the implementation of Islamic law and Hisbah operations will continue as permitted by the Constitution and in accordance with the cultural values of the people.

Also speaking, the Acting Chairman of the Zakkat and Endowment Commission, Sheikh Ali Quraish, stated that the proper collection of zakkat from the wealthy and its distribution to the needy is a key foundation for promoting peace and security within society.
