SENATE ADJOURNS EMERGENCY PLENARY ON STATE POLICE OVER REP’S DEATH. The Senate today suspended consideration of the highly anticipated State Police Bill and all other legislative business at its emergency plenary session to honour the memory of Hon. Yaya Tongo, a member of the House of Representatives, whose death cast a sombre mood over the National Assembly. The upper chamber had reconvened from recess amid expectations that lawmakers would accelerate action on the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police across the federation, a measure widely seen as a major step in the ongoing effort to reform Nigeria’s security architecture. However, proceedings were cut short after Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the death of Tongo, who represented the Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State in the House of Representatives.  Fireworks explosion allegedly kills two in Umuchu, Anambra State

Two persons were reportedly killed while several others sustained injuries following a fireworks explosion during a Christmas carnival in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, at the weekend.

The explosion reportedly occurred near the main stage of the event during the celebrations, forcing guests to scamper for safety.

The fireworks were allegedly packed in cartons and were intended to be disposed of at the venue when they suddenly exploded.

According to an eyewitness, one of the victims, identified simply as Ugochi, died on the spot, while another victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she later died.

There were fears that the death toll might rise, as many of the injured persons who sustained severe burns and deep cuts were said to be in critical condition.

“The knockout exploded like a bomb. Those closest to the stage collapsed immediately. The sound was deafening, and chaos erupted everywhere as people screamed for help,” the eyewitness said.

A video circulating on social media showed thick smoke filling the hall, with many attendees fleeing the venue, while the injured were rushed to hospitals for medical attention.

It would be recalled that ahead of the Christmas festivities, the Anambra State Police Command had issued a statement prohibiting the use of knockouts and other explosives during the yuletide celebrations.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, while announcing the ban, said the command would deploy robust security measures to ensure that residents and visitors enjoyed a peaceful celebration.
