Anambra-Born, Veteran Nollywood filmmaker and writer and Ugezu J. Ugezu has shared a reflective message on social media addressing honesty, traditional values, and what he described as the growing culture of pretence and forced positivity.
The message was shared on his official Instagram page, @ugezujugezu, where he spoke about the values he was raised with and the importance of speaking plainly about one’s true condition.
In the post, Ugezu explained that in the tradition he grew up in, people were encouraged to state things exactly as they were. According to him, openly admitting when one was broke, sick, or dissatisfied helped promote peace, clear boundaries, and genuine communal support, as others could easily recognise when help was truly needed.
He contrasted this with what he described as a newer mindset that encourages people to deny their realities by claiming to be rich when broke, fine when sick, and strong when weak. He added that this approach also discourages honest expression of personal feelings toward others.
Ugezu stated that after careful reflection, he remains convinced that traditional teachings are superior because they are rooted in truth, clarity, and communal responsibility, rather than pretence, manipulation, or self-deception disguised as faith or positivity.
He concluded by stressing that while truth may be uncomfortable, it ultimately brings healing.
