… Seals Public Toilets, Residential Buildings in Lagos
The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has intensified its compliance and enforcement drive against environmental pollution, sealing several public toilets and residential buildings across parts of Lagos for illegal sewage discharge and other sanitation violations that threaten public health and the environment.
In a series of enforcement operations carried out between March 9 and March 12, 2026, the Agency sealed facilities in Oyingbo, Alaba, and Alimosho over acts constituting environmental nuisance and deliberate pollution.
On Monday, March 9, the Agency sealed a residential property at No. 9, Taofeek Olowooke Street, Aboru, Alimosho, for the absence of toilet facilities, collapsed septic tanks, and the deliberate discharge of raw sewage into the environment.
On the same day, two additional residential buildings located at No. 15C and 17 Lomuwa Street, Pleasure, Alimosho, were sealed for similar sanitation violations, including collapsed septic tank systems and the discharge of untreated wastewater into the surroundings.
Earlier on Tuesday, March 10, LSWMO enforcement officers sealed five public toilets within Alaba-Oro Market in Alaba, Ajeromi/Ifelodun LCDA, including a Shell public toilet facility.
Investigations revealed that the operators had deliberately connected their sewage chambers directly into the public drainage channels, leading to the discharge of untreated waste into the environment. The practice resulted in offensive odours, sewage overflow within the community, and significant environmental pollution.
Similarly, on Thursday, March 12, LSWMO sealed a public toilet located on Freeman Street, Oyingbo, for discharging raw sewage and wastewater directly into the environment through illegal pipe connections into the public drains. The action, according to the Agency, was necessary as the discharge had polluted the surroundings, damaged an ongoing road construction project in the area, and posed serious health risks to residents.
LSWMO stated that such practices constitute serious environmental offences capable of endangering public health, contaminating the environment, and undermining sanitation standards across communities.
The Agency reiterated its commitment to enforcing environmental sanitation laws and urged residents, property owners, and facility operators to adopt proper wastewater management and hygiene practices to support public health and environmental sustainability.
LSWMO further warned that any act of environmental nuisance or pollution will attract appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution in accordance with existing laws.
Residents are encouraged to report sanitation violations or environmental infractions through the Agency’s official lines: 08022022397 and 07025332163, or via its social media platforms @lswmomedia on Instagram and X(Twitter), as well as The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office on Facebook.
