Turkey court sentences 8 people over deadly Antalya cable car accident that killed 1 and stranded 174 tourists

A court in southern Turkey has sentenced eight people to prison terms in connection with a 2024 cable car accident in Antalya that left one person dead and seven others injured.

Four defendants were convicted of causing death and injury through negligence, and each received a sentence of seven and a half years in prison. The remaining four were sentenced to between three years and four months and five years for the same offense.

The accident occurred on April 12, 2024, when a cable car gondola struck a pole, broke open, and sent passengers falling onto rocks below. The incident triggered a system shutdown, leaving 174 tourists stranded in midair for up to 23 hours before rescue teams brought them down safely.

The cable car connects Konyaalti Beach with a restaurant and viewing platform atop the 618-meter Tunektepe peak, a popular tourist destination in the coastal city. The crash took place during the Eid al-Fitr holiday period, marking the end of Ramadan.

Most of those convicted were employees of ANET, a municipal company operated by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality that manages the cable car system.
