APC Crisis in Abia: Protesters Reject Alleged Imposition of Candidate for Ikwuano/Umuahia Rep Seat

Fresh tension has hit the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as aggrieved party members stormed the state secretariat on Friday to protest alleged attempts to impose a candidate for the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat ahead of the party primaries.

The protesters, carrying placards with inscriptions such as “No To Imposition,” “Allow Free And Fair Primaries,” and “Let The Best Candidate Emerge,” expressed strong opposition to what they described as a move to hand the ticket to a preferred aspirant.

The protest followed a stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia North where some APC leaders and aspirants reportedly agreed to zone the House of Representatives seat to Ohuhu Clan. The arrangement was said to be aimed at completing the remaining four years of an alleged eight-year political rotation within the constituency. The meeting reportedly endorsed Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, popularly known as Don Lulu, as the consensus candidate.

However, supporters believed to be loyal to former Abia State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji, rejected the alleged endorsement, insisting that no individual or group has the power to impose a candidate on the party.

Speaking during the protest, Hon. Joshua Ezebuiro accused certain stakeholders of undermining assurances given by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, that there would be no automatic ticket or consensus arrangement unless all aspirants voluntarily agreed in writing.

“We don’t want any unpopular candidate imposed on us. If you are popular, come to the field and let the people decide,” Ezebuiro said.

APC stakeholder from Umuahia North, Barr. Ifeanyi Apugo, demanded a level playing field for all aspirants.

“We are not asking for any special favour. All we want is a free and fair primary election. If we lose, we accept it, and if we win, we celebrate it,” Apugo stated.

The protesters appealed to President Bola Tinubu, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, and other top APC leaders to intervene and ensure internal democracy is upheld in the party.

Reacting to the protest, Abia APC State Publicity Secretary, Chief Uche Aguoru, commended the demonstrators for conducting a peaceful protest. He assured them that the party leadership is committed to transparent, free, and credible primaries.

Aguoru explained that the APC constitution recognises only two methods of candidate selection: consensus and direct primaries. He stressed that consensus is only valid when all aspirants willingly agree in writing and endorse one candidate.

“In situations where aspirants fail to agree on consensus, the only available option is direct primaries, and the responsibility of the party is to ensure fairness for everyone,” he said.

He further assured all aspirants who bought nomination forms and passed screening that none would be unjustly disqualified.

“As I stand here today, I have the mandate of both the national chairman and the state chairman to assure you that nobody will be substituted and there will be free and fair elections,” Aguoru added.
