The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Onitsha Branch, popularly known as the Premier Bar, has commissioned an ultra-modern cloakroom at the Onitsha High Court premises in Anambra State.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Anambra State, Hon. Emmanuel D. Chukwuma, Esq., praised the Chairman of the Premier Bar, Chief Afam Obi, for what he described as visionary and purposeful leadership.
Chukwuma said that the project was conceived in 2024, noting that although similar opportunities had existed in the past, they were never pursued due to financial constraints.
According to him, the newly commissioned facility stands as one of the most remarkable projects in the history of the Onitsha Bar.
He explained that members of the branch deliberately chose not to place financial burdens on lawyers through levies, despite the project costing several millions of naira.
“We decided to take lawyers out of the beer parlours in this area for life. Any lawyer who wants to have private discussions with colleagues now has a befitting place to relax and interact,” he said.
Chukwuma added that the cloakroom, alongside the Premier Lounge and Gym, was designed to provide lawyers with a more professional and conducive environment for meetings and relaxation.
“We criticise the government, ourselves, and others in public places without knowing who is listening. That is part of the reason for establishing projects like the Premier Lounge, Gym, and Cloakroom,” he added.
He further commended Chief Afam Obi for his unwavering dedication and commitment to the development of the branch.
“I have never seen a man with such faith and determination like Afam Obi,” Chukwuma said.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the NBA Onitsha Branch, Chief Afam Obi, Esq., expressed appreciation to all individuals who contributed in one way or another toward the successful completion of the project.
He specifically acknowledged notable personalities whose support, he said, “changed the narrative,” including Ada Udobi, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, and Justice Pete Obiora (JCA), a former Secretary of the branch, among others.
Obi described the cloakroom project as a collective achievement aimed at improving the welfare and professional experience of lawyers within the Onitsha judicial community.
