Sally Field has reflected on the challenges she faced early in her career, particularly after starring in The Flying Nun, which left Hollywood reluctant to see her as a serious actress.
She recalled being shut out of auditions and dismissed by casting directors, describing the treatment as “rotten” and “unfair.”
Determined to prove herself, Field enrolled at the Actors Studio in Los Angeles, where she worked tirelessly to improve her craft under Lee Strasberg’s guidance.
It was during her time at the studio that Jack Nicholson noticed her dedication and recommended her to director Bob Rafelson and casting director Dianne Crittenden, which ultimately helped her land a role in the 1976 film Stay Hungry.
Field said her persistence paid off, believing her luck would change once she became “good enough.” Nicholson’s support marked a turning point in her career, helping her transition from sitcom star to respected actress.
However, Field also revealed troubling experiences during the audition process for Stay Hungry, alleging in her 2018 memoir In Pieces that Rafelson made inappropriate requests.
Though he denied the claims before his death in 2022, Field described the incidents as painful moments in her journey.
Despite these challenges, she went on to achieve remarkable success, winning two Academy Awards and earning acclaim across film and television, solidifying her place as one of Hollywood’s most respected performers.
