“SOUTH AFRICANS ARE NOT XENOPHOBIC” — PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA RESPONDS TO TENSIONS

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has addressed rising diplomatic tensions following reports that some members of the Nigerian Senate threatened to boycott South African businesses, including MTN Group, operating in Nigeria.

Speaking on the issue, Ramaphosa insisted that South Africans are not naturally hostile toward foreigners and stressed the country’s long history of unity and coexistence.

> “South Africans inherently are not against people from other nations. We are one people. We’ve always been one people,” he said.

The president also acknowledged concerns surrounding the safety of foreign nationals living in South Africa, while noting that the concerns of South African citizens must also be addressed.

Ramaphosa revealed that he had discussed the matter with Lazarus Chakwera, emphasizing the need for African countries to work together in tackling tensions and finding lasting solutions.

The comments come amid ongoing debates around xenophobia, immigration, and the treatment of African migrants within South Africa.
