Wizards win NBA draft lottery and secure No. 1 pick after franchise-worst season

The Washington Wizards secured the No. 1 overall pick in next month’s NBA draft after winning the draft lottery Sunday, marking a major turning point for a franchise coming off the worst season in the league.

Michael Winger, president of Monumental Basketball, represented the Wizards inside the lottery room as the ping-pong balls were revealed. The combination of 4-2-1 delivered Washington the top selection, giving the franchise its first No. 1 pick since selecting John Wall in 2010.

Winger said he realized the Wizards had won as soon as the second number was revealed. However, he had to keep his emotions in check until the results were officially announced on television roughly 45 minutes later.

After the announcement, Winger joined Wizards legend John Wall, vice president of player personnel Travis Schlenk, head coach Brian Keefe and assistant coach David Vanterpool on stage to celebrate the franchise-changing moment.

Winger called the top pick a reward for fans who endured several difficult seasons during the organization’s rebuilding process. Washington finished this season with a 17-65 record after three straight losing years that rank among the worst stretches in franchise history.

Wall, who represented the team during the lottery broadcast, said he believes the Wizards could quickly move toward playoff contention with the addition of another top young player.

Washington entered the lottery with a 14% chance of winning the top pick, tied for the best odds alongside Brooklyn and Indiana. The victory now allows the Wizards to select from a highly regarded group of college prospects expected to headline the draft.

Among the leading candidates for the No. 1 selection are BYU star AJ Dybantsa, Duke forward Cameron Boozer, Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, and North Carolina standout Caleb Wilson. Dybantsa led the nation in scoring, while Boozer captured national player of the year honors after averaging a double-double during his lone college season.

The Wizards already made major roster moves earlier this year by acquiring All-Stars Trae Young and Anthony Davis, and the No. 1 pick could significantly accelerate the franchise’s rebuild.

Keefe described the lottery win as another important step forward for the organization and praised the community and fans for remaining supportive throughout the team’s struggles.

Utah earned the No. 2 pick, followed by Memphis at No. 3 and Chicago at No. 4. The Los Angeles Clippers received the fifth selection through a previous trade with Indiana, while Brooklyn, Sacramento, Atlanta, Dallas, Milwaukee, Golden State, Oklahoma City, Miami and Charlotte rounded out the remainder of the lottery order.

The NBA draft is scheduled to begin June 23 in New York, while the draft combine opens this week in Chicago.

This year’s lottery may also mark the final season under the current format, which gives the league’s three worst teams equal 14% odds at the top pick. NBA owners are expected to review and potentially approve changes designed to further discourage teams from intentionally losing games in pursuit of better draft odds.
