CRIMEA SUSPENDS CIVILIAN GASOLINE SALES AS UKRAINIAN STRIKES DISRUPT FUEL SUPPLIES. (PHOTO).

Crimea suspends civilian gasoline sales as Ukrainian strikes disrupt fuel supplies

Occupying officials in Russian-controlled Crimea suspended all civilian gasoline sales on Sunday following a wave of intensified Ukrainian strikes targeting fuel infrastructure across the Black Sea peninsula.

The Kremlin-appointed governor of Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, announced that overnight Ukrainian attacks left four people dead and 28 others injured, though he did not identify the specific targets hit. Shortly after, Aksyonov declared an indefinite freeze on fuel sales to private individuals and non-state businesses. He stated that gasoline supplies would be strictly reserved for government and security agencies tasked with maintaining regional operations, urging the public to remain calm.

The targeted campaign has triggered the most severe energy crisis in Crimea since its annexation by Russia in 2014. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that a Crimean oil depot and a maritime transport facility in Russia’s neighboring Krasnodar region were among the primary targets. Zelenskyy characterized the operations as "long-range sanctions" designed to dismantle Russia's military energy network, asserting that shifting the momentum of the conflict requires a demonstration of long-range capabilities.

In Krasnodar, regional officials reported that a drone strike ignited a major fire at a Black Sea oil terminal in the village of Chushka and struck a transit ferry, resulting in one fatality.

The sweeping restrictions have left local motorists stranded. While Crimea has experienced intermittent fuel shortages in the past, the current deficit is unprecedented. In late May, regional authorities attempted to ration supplies by limiting drivers to 20 liters (approximately 5.3 gallons) of gasoline per week through a system of prepaid digital coupons. Demand immediately overwhelmed the digital distribution platform, leading to multi-hour queues at local filling stations.

The crisis has upended daily life, prompting the establishment of an official emergency hotline to assist stranded tourists. Social media platforms have filled with crowdsourced tips on locating remaining reserves. Some residents have attempted to transport fuel across the Kerch Strait bridge from mainland Russia, though vehicles are legally restricted to carrying a maximum of 100 liters (about 26.5 gallons). The shortage has also fueled a thriving black market, with speculators reselling gasoline at twice the standard market rate.

The Kremlin made a rare public admission acknowledging the severity of the supply breakdown and promised a rapid response to stabilize the peninsula. However, the logistical crisis underscores Ukraine's growing capacity to disrupt Russian supply lines, occurring at a time when Russian ground advances have largely stalled.
