Eight people have been confirmed dead following a violent clash between farmers and herders in Gulma Town, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, according to the state police command.
Police spokesperson SP Bashir Usman said the incident began after cattle allegedly destroyed farmlands, leading to a confrontation in which a farmer, identified as Alhaji Aminu Ala, was stabbed and killed by a herder, Yaron Buba-Dogo.
The development triggered a reprisal attack by some residents, resulting in the killing of the herder. Police said further violence escalated despite intervention efforts.
“The mob thereafter launched further attacks on members of the affected community. In spite of efforts by security personnel to restore order, four additional persons were killed and their bodies burnt beyond recognition,” SP Usman stated.
Authorities confirmed that one farmer and seven herders were among the dead, while five persons, including a woman, were rescued and taken into protective custody.
A joint security operation has since been deployed to restore order in the area, while the state government has imposed a curfew to prevent further violence.
Police say investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
