Jim Carrey in talks to return for How the Grinch Stole Christmas sequel

More than a quarter-century after Jim Carrey first donned the green fur to bring Dr. Seuss's classic character to life on the big screen, a live-action sequel to "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" has officially entered development.

Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are spearheading the follow-up to the 2000 holiday blockbuster. Studio executives are currently in negotiations with Carrey to reprise his legendary role as Whoville’s resident curmudgeon, while director Ron Howard is also slated to return to the director's chair. Though the project is in its early stages, the studios have enlisted screenwriters Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel to pen the script. The writing trio previously collaborated on the 2003 cinematic adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s “The Cat in the Hat.”

The original film, which debuted in November 2000, was a massive commercial triumph, grossing $260 million domestically and generating roughly $345 million at the global box office. Beyond its commercial success, the film secured an Academy Award for Best Makeup, recognizing the groundbreaking, exhaustive practical effects required to transform Carrey into the iconic green creature. The narrative was adapted from Dr. Seuss's beloved 1957 children's book, which follows the Grinch's cynical plot to ruin the holidays for Whoville before a change of heart helps him discover the true meaning of Christmas.

While the 2000 film was a standalone cinematic event, the literary source material recently expanded. In 2023, Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Random House Children’s Books published an official book sequel titled "How the Grinch Lost Christmas!" The newer story picks up one year after the events of the original tale and delivers a fresh seasonal message about humility and the holiday spirit.

Carrey has historically been candid about the intense physical toll the original production took on him. The grueling makeup application initially required up to eight hours a day in the stylist's chair, a claustrophobic process so distressing that the actor nearly walked away from the film before production was completed. However, Carrey recently indicated a renewed openness to revisiting Whoville, provided that modern filmmaking advancements—such as digital motion-capture technology—could alleviate the need for such intense daily practical makeup.

The Grinch franchise has maintained an enduring grip on pop culture across multiple generations. Alongside the legacy of the live-action version, Universal and Illumination successfully reimagined the story as a computer-animated feature in 2018, which also became a box office sensation. Decades later, Howard's 2000 live-action feature remains a dominant holiday staple, consistently ranking among the most-streamed movies globally every December.
