Manhunt for World Cup match shooter enters sixth day as FBI offers $25,000 reward
The manhunt for a suspect accused of targeting five vehicles in a string of highway shootings in Kansas City, Missouri, has entered its sixth day, with the suspect also linked to a separate shooting in nearby Kansas.
Law enforcement officials have yet to establish the location of 22-year-old Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, who has risen to the top of the region's most-wanted list. The FBI has intervened in the search, offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to his capture. Authorities have emphasized that the suspect is considered armed and dangerous, instructing the public to maintain their distance and contact police immediately if he is spotted.
Sanchez-Munoz is described as a white Hispanic male, standing 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing roughly 184 pounds. He has brown hair, brown eyes, a distinct tattoo on his right arm, and visible acne scarring. Beyond the Missouri attacks, he is a primary suspect in a shooting that occurred earlier this month across the state line in Wyandotte County, Kansas, where a firearm was discharged into a vehicle carrying a child.
In the initial days of the investigation, law enforcement tracked the suspect to a residence, initiating a multi-hour standoff. The home caught fire during the encounter, but a subsequent search of the extinguished structure revealed that Sanchez-Munoz had fled, leaving his vehicle behind at the scene. Investigators have since executed multiple search warrants across various properties and are actively questioning associates who may be assisting him.
The highway shootings took place on the evening of June 16 along major roadways near Interstate 70, coinciding with the opening World Cup match between Argentina and Algeria at Arrowhead Stadium. Five individuals—four adults and one teenager—were struck by gunfire. A 45-year-old man subsequently succumbed to his injuries. Another victim, an Uber driver transporting soccer fans to the stadium, sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg. Following the incident, responding police officers personally drove the stranded tournament spectators to the game.
Detectives have clarified that the violence does not appear to have any direct connection to the World Cup tournament. The attacks are currently being treated as entirely random, with investigators finding no prior relationship between the victims and no discernable motive.
Criminal justice experts note that the sizeable FBI bounty underscores the heightened urgency of the search. With large crowds filling Kansas City for global sporting events, an active, unpredictable shooter presents a severe public safety threat. Analysts warn that the random nature of the vehicle attacks suggests a high risk of reoffending, making a swift apprehension crucial to preventing further casualties.
