The attack, which occurred in July at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, resulted in the deaths of three American service members. Addressing journalists aboard Air Force One during his return flight from Ireland, Trump suggested that reciprocal surveillance is a standard practice among global superpowers.
“You know, when they say that China spies on us, I say you're right, and we spy on them too,” Trump remarked. “That's what we do. They basically do what we do.”
Details of the Intelligence Allegations
The controversy stems from a report by The Wall Street Journal, which cited anonymous U.S. officials claiming that Chinese entities had shared satellite data with Tehran prior to the strike. Notably, the officials did not name the specific entities involved, nor did the report accuse the Chinese government of direct complicity in the intelligence sharing.
When pressed on whether he would address these findings with Chinese President Xi Jinping during an expected bilateral meeting at the White House on September 24, Trump declined to commit. Beijing has not yet formally confirmed the upcoming visit. Trump instead emphasized his positive rapport with the Chinese leader.
“I think he's behaved reasonably well, and we behave reasonably well,” the President added, reflecting an effort to prevent further escalation in Washington-Beijing relations.
