 China detains US seismologist for nearly two years without trial as family seeks release before Xi visit A China-born American seismologist has been detained in China for nearly two years without trial, with his family now publicly calling for his release as diplomatic efforts continue over his case. Youlin Chen, a Boston resident and U.S. citizen, was detained by Chinese state security officials in November 2024 while visiting his parents in Beijing and has since been charged with espionage, according to an organization assisting his family. Chen’s wife, Yufang Rong, said she has not spoken with him in more than 600 days and expressed concerns about his health and well-being. She said President Donald Trump has taken an interest in the case and she hopes his administration can help bring Chen home. 2019 PRESIDENTIAL POLL: I WILL DEFEAT BUHARI,SAYS FAYOSE.

      Ekiti State Governor, Chief Ayodele Fayose, has said he will defeat incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, in a free and fair presidential election come 2019 if chosen as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He stated this on Thursday in Abuja while openly declaring his intention to fly the PDP flag in the election.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, the governor said he had the penchant for defeating incumbents, the PDP required somebody like him to be its candidate.
The governor also opined that his ambition was not against the zoning arrangement of his party.
“However, I am a supporter of competence and capacity, especially now that this country needs young and able leaders that can take our country out of this present state of hopelessness.
“Most importantly, despite that the party has zoned the presidency to the North, it may interest you that no one has come out in this manner to show interest and our party should not wait or beg anyone to fly its flag. Do we now say that if no one comes out from the North, the party won’t have a candidate?
“Going down memory lane, in 1999 and 2003, despite that our party zoned the presidency to the South, the likes of Alhaji Abubakar Rimi of blessed memory and Chief Banabas Gemade contested the ticket.
“Also in 2007, some party members from the South did not only declare their intention to contest, they also showed interest and obtained nomination Forms. Those from the South were; Chief Victor Attah, Dr. Peter Odili, Dr. Sam Egwu, Dr. Donald Duke, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, Owelle Rochas Okorocha among others.
“This, in itself, assisted in deepening democracy,” he said.
He said he would handle the nation’s resources better and embarked on policies to revamp education, health care, industrialization, agriculture, infrastructure among others.
Speaking on the occasion, former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, said Fayose is a man of courage who could take the nation to the promised land.
In a similar manner, former Deputy National Vice Chairman, Southwest of the PDP, Alhaji Tajudeen Oladipo, said he knew Fayose when he was aspiring to become the Ekiti State in 2003 and that the governor could be described as a prophet whose words do come to pass.Goodwill messages were sent by groups from across the country.
