Onitsha, June 11, 2022 (MOI) Following the incessant killings happening in every part of Nigeria, the Diocese on the Niger Anglican Communion, has condemned the bloody trend, urging the Federal Government to give maximum security to the lives and properties of the citizens.
The Diocese expressed dismay at the present level of insecurity in the country, bemoaning how the phenomenon had reduced the population of the nation as well as inflicted physical and emotional pains to many Nigerians.
The Bishop on the Niger, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo, made the condemnation in the Presidential Address he delivered at the First Session of the 32nd Synod of the Diocese going on at All Saints' Cathedral, Onitsha.
The Bishop's address pointed on various terror groups operating as unknown gunmen, bandits, suspected Fulani herders and Boko Haram sects which had constantly laid siege on communities and individuals in the country.
He appealed to the Federal Government to rise to the occasion by altering the present gruesome narratives in the country, reminding it that it was its constitutional responsibility to protect the lives and properties of its citizens.
Advising the Federal Government on how to contain the assaults, Bishop Nwokolo encouraged it to beef up the nation's military strength by voting adequate budget, quality military personnel and procuring modern fighting hardware for the military.
He said, “Nigerians can no longer tolerate the on-going senseless killings here and there’’.
On the Federal Government/ASUU face- off, the Bishop condemned what he described as frequent industrial actions by the nation's universities, requesting the Government to have an objective appraisal of the demands of the lecturers and to do the needful.
Equally on the part of ASUU, Bishop Nwokolo entreated it to reassess its demands, explaining that in negotiations of such nature and magnitude, disagreeing parties were expected to shift grounds for a possible positive resolution.
``They should do this, at least, for the education and future of our children," he added.
The Bishop congratulated the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo on his emergence as the governor of the state, thanking God for what he described as the peaceful election that brought him to power.
Bishop Nwokolo, however, counseled the governor not to be oblivious of the numerous challenges ahead, telling him that as there were no good roads in the state, he should be generous enough to budget adequate funds to fix them.
On refuse management, the Bishop said, “as we commend him for swiftly clearing mountain of refuse heaps that greeted him on arrival, we earnestly urge him to workout strategies on how to maintain cleanliness in the state’’.
Fund raising and Choir renditions formed part of the climax of the day’s session.
Over 15 bishops and Archbishops from various parts of Nigeria were in attendance at the Synod. (MOI)
