 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police.  INEC Seeks Support Of NAF For Logistics Delivery

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC says the commission will collaborate with the Nigeria Air Force in the distribution of materials to the three locations in the North East, South East, South West geo political zones of the country.


Professor Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman stated this in Abuja when he visited the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar.


Professor Yakubu said the visit was necessary due to the act that, the commission would conduct bye-elections and re-run elections in 26 States of the Federation this Saturday.


“In all the elections, Candidates will fill vacancies in three Senatorial Districts, 17 Federal and 28 State Constituencies spread across 80 Local Government Areas, 575 Registration Areas/Wards and 8,934 Polling Units involving 4,904,627 registered voters out of which 4,613,291 Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) have been collected.”


The INEC Chairman said that the law empowered the Commission to seek the support of the security, intelligence and law enforcement agencies in the delivery of materials and the protection of election officials as clearly provided for in section 27(3) of the Electoral Act 2022.


Professor Yakubu explained that the Commission had already indicated to the Chief of the Air Staff the specific locations and the tonnage of materials to be airlifted.


He lauded the Armed Forces for always maintaining neutrality and professionalism during election operations.


Responding, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar promised to support the Electoral Body in its efforts to conduct free, fair and credible elections in the country.


He told the INEC Chairman that the materials could be delivered a little earlier due to the capacity of the Aircraft that was available.
