 Court Jails Two for N14.8m Fraud in Maiduguri Justice B.T Zannah of the Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri, on Monday, July 13, 2026 convicted and sentenced two to three years imprisonment. The convicts are: Babagana Bukar and Hauwa Chabri.  The convicts were arraigned on Monday, July 13, 2026 by the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a separate one -count charge for the offence of criminal misappropriation to the tune of N14,800,000.00 (Fourteen  Million, Eight Hundred Thousand Naira). The charge against Bukar reads: "That you, Babagana Bukar sometimes in 2025 at Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, dishonestly misappropriated and converted to your own use the aggregate sum of N8,800,000.00 (Eight Million, Eight Hundred Thousand Naira)  money belonging to Bunu Gambo Liman, being amount given to you through Babakura Umar and Bello Adamu for the supplies of 100 bags of IRS...

 Zamfara: Governor Dauda Lawal declares state of emergency on Healthcare


 


In Zamfara state Health and medical facilities are facing serious decay and threat to patients as well as the staff.


This was disclosed by the state Governor Dauda Lawal during a state wide broadcast   


Governor Dauda who declared a state of emergency on the health sector of the state said his government is committed to revamping the state's healthcare system.

 

The governor lamented the disturbing conditions of the hospitals across the state and noted that he paid an unscheduled visit to Gusau's general hospital where he expressed concern over the poor conditions that patients were experiencing in hospitals and highlighted steps of intervention by his administration

 

According to him, the hospitals needed intervention urgently due to the poor state of facilities, equipment and the workers. As a result, he stressed that a state of emergency was declared in the sector.

  

“On Sunday,  January 28, 2024, I paid an unscheduled visit to  General Hospital in Gusau to assess its condition. I was shocked and worried by the unhealthy and poor environment that patients seeking medical attention were exposed to.


“It is not just the infrastructural decay that is affecting the health sector in Zamfara State, but the working condition of the healthcare service providers and their welfare is also of great concern.


“As a responsible government, we are taking urgent steps towards intervention. He declared 


Dauda said that his campaign manifesto highlighted the crucial healthcare issues that Zamfara State faces. These issues are paramount to the welfare and progress of our citizens. He therefore vowed to address them with the utmost urgency and attention they deserve.


“The health sector in Zamfara is suffering from multiple issues, including poor funding and quality of healthcare delivery, ranging from infrastructure to medical services.


He lamented that Many lives were lost due to the unwanted condition of the health facilities in the state which he pledged to revamp the sector.


He revealed that his administration will improve the quality of all general hospitals through massive infrastructural development, providing State-of-the-art medical equipment, and establishing standard laboratories for proper diagnosis.


Other pledges were provision of free Maternal and child healthcare to reduce maternal and child  Mortality;  giving special attention to Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in providing standard primary healthcare delivery to remote communities as well as developing a plan to enhance the well-being and welfare of all healthcare service providers in the state.


According to the governor, the state government will establish an affordable and comprehensive health insurance scheme, providing access to quality healthcare services for all citizens of Zamfara State and distribute the necessary equipment and essential medicines to all hospitals across the 14 local government areas and a mandatory physical verification of all hospital staff, including casual workers.
