ADC Demands Cancellation of Yobe LG Elections Over Alleged Irregularities

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Yobe State has called for the annulment of the June 2024 local government elections conducted by the State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC) due to alleged irregularities.

At a press briefing in Damaturu, the ADC’s Yobe State Chairman, Umar Kalli Alhaji, accused the electoral commission of preventing the party from participating in the election. He claimed that the commission failed to adhere to the 2022 Electoral Act, which requires political parties to be notified six months in advance of an election.

Alhaji further alleged that the ADC was not informed by the YSIEC about the election in time to submit candidates for chairmanship and councillorship positions, violating the provisions of the Electoral Act.

“We want the public to know that our case with YSIEC is currently pending in the high court, challenging the legitimacy of the election process in Yobe State,” Alhaji said.

In response, YSIEC Chairman Mamman Mohammad denied any knowledge of a court case against the commission. He explained that the election date had been extended by two weeks, but no complaints or indications of the ADC’s unwillingness to participate were received during that period.

In the June 2024 local government elections, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State won all 17 local government chairmanship seats and all 178 councillorship positions.
