 U.S imposes sanctions on former Congo President Joseph Kabila The United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila for his support of ‌Rwanda-backed M23 rebels and for fueling political instability in Congo's troubled east. The U.S. Treasury Department said M23 and its political-military arm, the Congo River Alliance (AFC), had been stoking violent conflict in eastern DRC, resulting in the deaths of thousands of civilians and a mass displacement crisis. Treasury said Kabila had provided financial support to the ​AFC in order to influence the political situation in eastern DRC, while encouraging DRC troops to defect and join AFC forces. ​It said Kabila was working to regain influence over the government by backing a candidate opposed to the current ⁠leader.  Abia Govt Distributes 53 Transformers to Rural Communities to Boost Electricity Supply


The Abia State Government has begun distributing 53 newly procured transformers to various communities across the state to enhance electricity supply.


According to a statement from Divine Nwankwo, Head of the Information Department at Government House, Umuahia, the first batch was allocated to 11 communities on Tuesday.


Governor Alex Otti, represented by the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, described the initiative as part of his administration’s commitment to ensuring reliable electricity, a crucial factor for industrialization and economic growth in Abia.


He emphasized that the beneficiaries were selected on a "first come, first served" basis and urged community leaders to safeguard the transformers from vandalism, as they were funded by taxpayers' money.


Speaking on behalf of the benefiting communities, Eze Innocent Ezeala of the Ibe Uzo Amawom – Oboro community in Ikwuano LGA expressed gratitude to the governor, praising the initiative as a significant step in the state’s development. He also commended the transparent process, stating that no bribes were required to secure the transformers.


Some of the first-phase beneficiaries include Umuogo in Umuahia South LGA, Amaegbuato-Nkpa in Bende LGA, Okpuala/Umuelenwa in Isiala Ngwa North LGA, and Atani Abam in Arochukwu LGA, among others.


Government officials present at the event included the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power and Public Utilities, Nwanyịeze Otum.
