The Abia State Government has begun distributing 53 newly procured transformers to various communities across the state to enhance electricity supply.
According to a statement from Divine Nwankwo, Head of the Information Department at Government House, Umuahia, the first batch was allocated to 11 communities on Tuesday.
Governor Alex Otti, represented by the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, described the initiative as part of his administrationās commitment to ensuring reliable electricity, a crucial factor for industrialization and economic growth in Abia.
He emphasized that the beneficiaries were selected on a "first come, first served" basis and urged community leaders to safeguard the transformers from vandalism, as they were funded by taxpayers' money.
Speaking on behalf of the benefiting communities, Eze Innocent Ezeala of the Ibe Uzo Amawom ā Oboro community in Ikwuano LGA expressed gratitude to the governor, praising the initiative as a significant step in the stateās development. He also commended the transparent process, stating that no bribes were required to secure the transformers.
Some of the first-phase beneficiaries include Umuogo in Umuahia South LGA, Amaegbuato-Nkpa in Bende LGA, Okpuala/Umuelenwa in Isiala Ngwa North LGA, and Atani Abam in Arochukwu LGA, among others.
Government officials present at the event included the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power and Public Utilities, Nwanyį»eze Otum.
