NLC Demands Workersā€™ Protection Amid Rivers Political Crisis

The Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged that workers remain unaffected by the stateā€™s ongoing political crisis. The union called for the immediate implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage at the local government level and the payment of all outstanding salaries.

NLC Chairman Alex Agwanwor reaffirmed opposition to the state of emergency in Rivers and warned that if salaries remain unpaid by the end of March 2025, the union may take legal or industrial action.

Local government workers have yet to receive their February salaries following the Supreme Courtā€™s annulment of the 2024 LGA elections, which led to the removal of all 23 chairmen. Rivers is currently under a Sole Administrator appointed by President Bola Tinubu, a decision that has drawn widespread criticism.
