Yemen fighting pushes nearly 3,000 to Djibouti in less than a week: UN    Nearly 3,000 people have fled Yemen for Djibouti in less than a week as escalating violence drives growing displacement within the country and across its borders, the UN refugee agency said Friday. “Refugees continue to arrive by boat through Obock, Khor Angar, Moulhoule and Godoria after difficult journeys in small vessels,” UNHCR representative in Djibouti Sandrine Desamours told reporters in Geneva, Anadolu Agency reported. More than half of those crossing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are women and children, while some families have been displaced for a second time after previously fleeing Yemen during the 2015 crisis and later returning. UNHCR is preparing for at least 10,000 new arrivals but warned that capacity is rapidly diminishing. SENATE ORDERS INEC TO CONDUCT BY-ELECTIONS IN EDO CENTRAL AND ANAMBRA SOUTH. (PHOTO).

The Senate has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct by-elections to fill the vacant seats in Edo Central and Anambra South Senatorial Districts.


Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during plenary on Tuesday, officially declaring the vacancies.


The Edo Central seat has been vacant since December 2024, when Monday Okpebholo was inaugurated as Governor of Edo State. Similarly, the Anambra South seat has remained unoccupied since the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in July 2024.


INEC had earlier stated that it was awaiting a formal request from the Senate before proceeding with a by-election for Anambra South.


With both senatorial districts currently unrepresented in the upper legislative chamber, Akpabio urged INEC to conduct the elections to restore representation for the affected constituencies.
