 ZIMBABWEAN COUPLE DEPORTED OVER SECRET BURIAL OF CHILD IN BOTSWANA A Zimbabwean couple has been deported from Botswana after secretly burying their child without notifying authorities. Motilinah Mpofu and Christopher Ncube were convicted on Thursday of concealing a death after they allegedly dug a grave for their child in the dead of night. The Gaborone court heard the child had died suddenly. Instead of reporting the death to police, health officials, or traditional leaders, the couple quietly buried the youngster and hoped no one would find out. But the secret did not stay buried for long.   Police moved in and arrested the pair.  EFCC Arraigns One for N1.6m Fraud in Maiduguri


The Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 arraigned one Alhaji Abba Umar before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court,  Maiduguri.


The defendant was arraigned on a one-count charge bordering on criminal misappropriation to the tune of N1, 600,000.00 (One Million and Six Hundred Thousand Naira)


The charge reads: "That you, Alhaji Abba Umar, sometimes in March, 2022 in Maiduguri, Borno State, within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly induced Modu Goni Sheriff to deliver to you his title document of a plot of land measuring 450 square meters with right of occupancy no. BO/46605/4 dated 19/03/2002 in the name of Mohammed Goni Umar and located at No. BOTP/178 Abbaganaram Housing Estate where you sold the same plot of land to another person at the rate of N1,600,00.00 (One Million and Six Hundred Thousand Naira) which you are yet to deliver and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 320 (a) and punishable under Section 322 of the Penal Code Cap 102 Laws of Borno State.”


The defendant pleaded 'not guilty' to the charge when it was read to him.  Thereafter, prosecution counsel,  S.O Saka prayed for a trial date and the remand of the defendant in a Correctional Centre.


Justice Kumaliya thereafter adjourned till June 4, 2025  and remanded the defendant in a Maiduguri Correctional Centre.


His journey to the correctional facility started when a title document for a plot of land located at Abbaganaram Housing Estate was entrusted to him and he sold the same plot of land to another without the consent of the owner.
