The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially approved the Sam Okwaraji Secondary Schools Soccer Championship, a nationwide initiative to foster grassroots football development. The decision follows the endorsement of the Senate Committee on Sports Development, chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi.
Organized by the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation, the annual championship honors the late Nigerian international footballer Samuel Okwaraji, who tragically collapsed and died during a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Angola at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, in August 1989. Okwaraji, educated at an Italian university in Rome, exemplified patriotism through his dedication to the national team, then known as the Green Eagles.
In a letter signed by Ruth David, NFF’s Acting Director of Competitions, the federation praised the championship’s objectives, noting its potential to positively impact participating youths and advance football development in Nigeria. The NFF also commended the foundation’s vision for contributing to grassroots football growth.
The federation urged organizers to comply with FIFA’s rules during the competition, which is slated to begin later this year. Okwaraji’s legacy of selflessness and service continues to inspire Nigerian youth, serving as a model for future generations.
