Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has approved the suspension of three public officials, resolving a tense standoff with the Benue State House of Assembly. The decision follows the Assembly’s resolution to suspend the officials for one month each, a move the governor initially delayed, sparking friction between the executive and legislative arms of government.
The affected officials are Mr. Maxwell Ogiri, Executive Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area; Mrs. Grace Adagba, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB); and Mr. Michael Uper, Executive Secretary of the Benue State Lottery Commission. The suspensions take effect immediately, as announced in a statement on Wednesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula.
The statement outlined Governor Alia’s affirmation of the Assembly’s resolutions, emphasizing his commitment to the rule of law and separation of powers. “In line with the resolutions passed by the House, His Excellency affirms the suspension of the three officials for a period of one month, effective from today,” the statement read. It further noted that the governor commended the Assembly for fulfilling its constitutional duties and urged affected institutions to ensure uninterrupted service delivery during the suspension period.
Governor Alia also reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and good governance, calling on the people of Benue State to support ongoing efforts to build a state that serves all citizens.
The suspensions mark the resolution of a dispute that had raised concerns about the balance of power within the state government, with the governor now aligning with the Assembly’s directive.
