Kaduna businessman drags ex fiancee’s father to court, demands dowry refund A businessman, Nasiru Dayyabu, on Wednesday, dragged the father of his ex-fiance, Mallam Sani Direba, to Shari’a Court II sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna over N260,000 dowry. The complainant had joined Direba in the suit against two brothers demanding a refund of N250, 000 dowry and N10,000 introduction money he paid to marry his daughter. Represented by his counsel, Mr Sani Sunusi, the complainant told the court that he sent his people from Karaye, Kano State to Kaduna in 2025, to seek for the defendant’s daughter’s hand in marriage. “We paid the dowry and the introduction money (kudin gausuwa) and were waiting for them to set a date for the wedding,” he said. “Unfortunately, the lady’s father called to inform us that they have cancelled the marriage.” The counsel said the complainant had asked for the refund of his money since Sept. 2025 but all the efforts he made proved abortive.  Abia Assembly’s Lone APC Lawmaker, Hon. Anderson Akaliro, Defects to Labour Party

In a significant political shift, Hon. Barrister Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, the only All Progressives Congress (APC) member in the Abia State House of Assembly, has officially defected to the Labour Party. Akaliro represents the Ohuhu/Umuahia North State Constituency.

In a resignation letter addressed to the APC Chairman in Umuahia North, Hon. Akaliro cited persistent internal rancour, marginalisation, and a series of what he described as unjustified suspensions as key reasons for his departure from the party.

“The atmosphere within the party has become increasingly hostile and toxic. My decision to leave is not taken lightly, but it has become necessary for the continued effective representation of my constituents,” the lawmaker wrote in his letter.

Akaliro’s defection marks a major blow to the APC in Abia State, which has struggled to maintain a foothold in a political landscape largely dominated by the Labour Party and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). With his exit, the APC now holds no seats in the Abia State House of Assembly.

Political analysts view Akaliro’s move as both symbolic and strategic. His decision aligns him with the growing influence of the Labour Party in the South-East region, particularly following the party's strong performance in the 2023 general elections and its expanding grassroots support.

A prominent legal practitioner and vocal advocate for youth empowerment and good governance, Akaliro has built a reputation for independent thinking and constituency engagement. His legislative efforts have included motions on rural infrastructure, public health, and education in Umuahia North and beyond.

Reacting to the news, residents of Ohuhu and political observers have expressed mixed reactions. While some commend the lawmaker for "choosing progress over politics," others question whether the move is motivated more by political survival than principle.

A source within the Labour Party confirmed that Akaliro’s formal welcome and presentation to the party structure would take place in the coming days, likely at the party’s secretariat in Umuahia.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, Hon. Akaliro's defection is expected to further alter the political dynamics in Abia State, with implications for party strategies and constituency alignment.
