LASEPA TAKES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ADVOCACY TO TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

... Hosts Two-day Sensitisation Programme in LASUSTECH, LASUED

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA)  commenced a two-day Sensitisation and Awareness Programme on Environmental Protection with the theme: “The Power of Small Action: How Individuals Shape a Sustainable World.”

The programme, which started on Wednesday, included an advocacy visit to the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Ikorodu.

Speaking at the event, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi underscored the critical role of individuals in shaping a cleaner, healthier, and sustainable environment.

Dr Ajayi, who was represented at Ikorodu by the Director of Noise Pollution Control, Mrs. Abosede Natufe, noted that the state of the environment today is the outcome of actions taken in the past, urging young people to embrace sustainable habits to secure a better future.

He outlined practical ways students can contribute to environmental sustainability, including adopting eco-friendly practices at home, conserving energy,  reducing food waste, and ensuring proper disposal of materials such as used oil.

Dr. Ajayi further encouraged students to embrace the principles of “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle,” stressing that even the smallest lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the impact of climate change.

In his remarks, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Union Affairs (Tertiary Education), Mr. Kappo Samuel, charged students to be at the forefront of building a new Lagos and Nigeria with sustainable environmental practices.

He emphasised that while governments and institutions drive policies and investments, true progress lies in the consistent daily actions of individuals.

Mr. Samuel commended LASUSTECH for its culture of innovation and creativity, urging students to collaborate across disciplines, initiate sustainability-focused projects, and transform their academic research into solutions that address pressing challenges such as climate change, flooding, urbanisation, and inequality.

In her remarks, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Environmental Matters, Ms. Adebowale Tolulope, stressed that environmental challenges in Lagos, including flooding, are often the result of small and careless actions such as indiscriminate waste disposal and disregard for environmental regulations.

She called on students to adopt sustainable habits such as conserving water and energy, reducing single-use plastics, recycling, planting trees, and joining cleanup initiatives. She reminded participants that, “we borrow the earth from our children, and the decisions made today will shape their future.”

The Dean of Students’ Affairs at LASUSTECH, Dr. Ademola Aderogba reiterated the importance of environmental education, urging students to embrace the lessons shared at the programme and commit to making sustainability a part of their everyday lives.

The event brought together students, academics, and dignitaries and provided a platform for discussions on practical solutions toward creating a greener, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.
