Femke Kok defeats Jutta Leerdam in 500m speedskating, secures Olympic title

Dutch speedskater Femke Kok claimed gold in the 500 meters at the Milan-Cortina Games on Sunday, setting a new Olympic record and adding to her world mark. Kok powered past defending champion Erin Jackson in the final heat and held off teammate Jutta Leerdam, who took silver after winning the 1,000 meters earlier in the week. Kok finished in 36.49 seconds, 0.66 seconds ahead of Leerdam, while Japan’s Miho Takagi earned bronze in 37.27 seconds, marking her second medal of the Games and ninth overall Olympic medal. Jackson, the 2018 champion, finished fifth in 37.32 seconds.

Kok celebrated with arms raised and a moment of emotion as Dutch fans cheered, while Leerdam showed visible frustration after briefly holding the lead in the heats. Kok’s victory prevented Leerdam from becoming just the third woman in Olympic history to win both the 500 and 1,000 meters at the same Games. On the men’s side, Italy edged the U.S. in the team pursuit quarterfinals but both advanced due to the fastest overall times. Italy’s team finished in 3:38.40, while the Americans clocked 3:39.37. In the semifinals on Tuesday, Italy faces the Netherlands, and the U.S. goes against China. Two-time defending champion Norway failed to advance, posting the sixth-best time of the eight quarterfinalists.
