 Texas Senate race heats up as James Talarico’s pastor caught saying some churchgoers 'wish' Trump assassin was 'more successful'


The Texas Senate race between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico has been shaped by a heated debate over religion in politics. 


The controversy erupted after Reverend Babs Miller of Talarico’s Austin church was caught on video suggesting that some congregants wished the assassination attempt on Donald Trump had been “more successful.”


 The remarks drew swift condemnation from critics, who warned against using faith to justify violence and called the comments a betrayal of Christian teachings on peace.


The uproar highlighted the starkly different religious approaches of the two candidates. Paxton, a staunch evangelical, campaigns on traditional faith‑based rights and opposition to liberal cultural trends. 


Talarico, a seminary student, frames his politics around the biblical command to “love your neighbor,” emphasizing tolerance and personal liberty. Rather than staying defensive, Talarico’s campaign has redirected attention to Paxton’s long history of ethical and legal troubles, including criminal charges and a legislative trial.


Paxton’s controversies reached a peak in May 2023 when the Texas House voted overwhelmingly to impeach him on 20 counts, including bribery, abuse of office, and obstruction of justice. 


The charges centered on his ties to real estate developer Nate Paul, who allegedly provided personal benefits in exchange for Paxton’s efforts to shield him from federal investigation. 


The scandal, combined with the religious disputes, has made the Senate race a flashpoint for national attention, underscoring the collision of faith, ethics, and politics in Texas.
