TWO MEN HAVE BEEN JAILED AFTER LAUNCHING A SUSTAINED AND VIOLENT ASSAULT ON A MAN IN A RESIDENTIAL STREET IN PETERBOROUGH. (PHOTO).

Two men have been jailed after launching a sustained and violent assault on a man in a residential street in Peterborough.

Audrius Verkauskas, 40, and Aurimas Bekeris, 37, carried out the attack in Gladstone Street at around 9am on 19 December following a confrontation with the victim, who is the former partner of Verkauskas’ girlfriend.

The court heard that a heated exchange began after the pair spotted the man near their home. The confrontation quickly escalated into violence, with Verkauskas and Bekeris subjecting the victim — a man in his 40s — to a prolonged and sustained attack.

Even after initially walking away, the two men returned multiple times to continue beating him. They repeatedly punched and stamped on the victim as he lay motionless on the ground.

Emergency services were called, and the injured man was taken to Peterborough City Hospital for treatment. He suffered a suspected broken nose, including a complex laceration, as well as bruising to his chest.

Both Verkauskas and Bekeris admitted assault causing grievous bodily harm without intent.

At a hearing on Thursday (18 February) at Peterborough Crown Court, the pair were each sentenced to one year and four months in prison.

In addition to their custodial sentences, the court imposed a five-year restraining order prohibiting them from contacting the victim.

The attack, which took place in broad daylight in a residential neighbourhood, has left a lasting impact on the victim and prompted concern among local residents.
