Senate President Godswill Akpabio has appealed to the people of the South East to sustain peace and prevent their youth from engaging in armed struggle against the Federal Government. Akpabio made the plea on Saturday during the funeral of Sir Albert Ikechukwu Nnamani, former Administrative Secretary of the defunct Oil Mineral Producing Area Development Commission (OMPADEC), held in Ikem, Enugu State. In a statement made available to journalists in Abuja, Akpabio emphasised that development can only thrive in a peaceful atmosphere and urged Ndigbo to properly mentor the younger generation. “For Ndigbo, I want to plead with you to continue to maintain the peace and watch the youth of today. They don’t understand politics. They don’t understand development. You can only have development in an area of peace,” Akpabio said. He warned that any attempt to wrest power or assert independence through armed struggle would fail, stating that “State power will always overwhelm you.” The Senate Pre...

Amanda Peet Opens Up About Her Breast Cancer Diagnosis Amid Family Loss

Amanda Peet, the actress known for Your Friends & Neighbors, has revealed that she was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer last fall, during a period of immense personal loss.

In an essay for The New Yorker published Saturday, March 21, Peet shared that her parents were both gravely ill in hospices at the time, on opposite coasts of the United States.

Peet, 54, explained that she had been under medical supervision for years, with her breasts flagged for “extra monitoring,” and visits to a breast surgeon every six months. What began as a routine scan before Labor Day turned into a moment she knew would change everything.

“Dr. K… told me that she didn’t like the way something looked on the ultrasound and wanted to perform a biopsy,” Peet wrote.

“After the procedure, she said she would hand-deliver the sample to Pathology. That’s when I knew.”

The tests revealed a small tumor, and an MRI was ordered to determine the extent of the disease.

Peet recounted the emotional whirlwind of managing her own health while her parents’ conditions worsened. After her first round of tests, she flew to New York to be with her father, but tragically did not arrive before he passed away.

Returning to Los Angeles, Peet received a call from her doctor informing her that the cancer was HER2-negative, meaning the cancer cells did not overexpress the protein that typically drives growth.

“You’d think that I had just taken Ecstasy. I was happier than I’d been pre-diagnosis,” she recalled. Yet her relief was short-lived, as she still needed an MRI and more tests to check for further involvement.

The radiologist found no signs of lymph-node involvement, but a second mass was discovered in the same breast, prompting additional examinations.

Peet described the process with candor: “It was dawning on me that cancer diagnoses come in a slow drip.”
