This troubling incident occurred on May 4th, in San Bernardino County, California. The entire heartbreaking encounter was captured on Jesus Serna's security camera.
In the footage, you can see a deputy with the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department open the gate leading into Jesus's back yard and enter. As soon as he is in the yard, Jesus's dog 'Raven' approaches the deputy, wagging her tail. Seconds later, Jesus's Rottweiler 'Daisy' approaches the deputy in the same manner and this is when the morning takes a dark turn.
As Daisy approaches, the unnamed deputy draws his weapon and shoots her, k*lling the pet dog on the spot.
After Daisy was shot, Raven ran out of the unsecured gate and was wandering the neighborhood. An animal control officer was called to the scene to collect the deceased dog. While there, the officer also caught Raven and took her to the animal shelter.
Jesus ultimately had to pay $250.00 to retrieve Raven after learning of Daisy's passing.
Authorities did not notify him until later in the afternoon. When he asked why the deputy was even in his yard to begin with, he learned that the department was in the neighborhood investigating a stolen vehicle.
Neither Jesus Serna, nor his property, had any connection to the stolen vehicle. Authorities would later confirm that fact in a statement released by the department. The deputy reportedly should not have been on the property.
Jesus is now hoping for answers on why a deputy was even on his property for a case he had no connection to.
Jesus says he has many questions about the series of events that led to the death of Daisy.
He is heartbroken over the loss of Daisy, saying she has been a part of the family for 5 years. In the video you can see her approach the deputy in a non-threatening way. It appears she may have barked.
Jesus says he would like to see the deputy receive some sort of disciplinary action to move toward some sort of justice in the senseless death of his pet.
The San Bernardino Sheriff's Department says they are investigating the incident. They say they will review the body camera and security footage.
Our thoughts are with Jesus and we hope Daisy gets the justice she deserves. Jesus said that Raven just cries nonstop in the backyard and even provided video of Raven loudly crying, obviously grieving the loss of her best friend.
