Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has emerged as the consensus candidate of the Labour Party in the party’s governorship primary election ahead of the next general election.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that all Labour Party candidates for the State House of Assembly, House of Representatives and Senate also emerged through a consensus candidature process, which was subsequently endorsed by delegates across the state’s political wards.
Announcing the results on Saturday in Umuahia, the Returning Officer for the Labour Party primary elections in Abia and Chairman of the party’s Electoral Committee, Mrs. Oluchi Opara, said the exercise was conducted through direct primaries across the state.
Opara stated that the election complied substantially with the provisions of the Labour Party Constitution, the Electoral Act 2026 and the Labour Party Electoral Guidelines 2026. She added that after voting and collation of results from the local government areas, the committee authenticated and compiled the outcome in accordance with the party’s rules and applicable electoral laws.
The National Secretary of the Labour Party, Chief Acho Obioma, described the exercise as peaceful, orderly and successful, noting that members participated actively across the state’s wards without any recorded incidents.
According to Obioma, the successful conduct of the primary election marks the beginning of a new phase of political engagement and expansion for the party. He commended party members and electoral officials for their conduct throughout the process and expressed satisfaction with what he described as a transparent and peaceful exercise.
In his acceptance speech, Otti praised the party’s electoral and primary election committees for conducting what he called a peaceful and credible exercise across the state.
The governor said no adverse reports were received from any part of Abia, describing the process as transparent and orderly. He also commended election observers from the Independent National Electoral Commission and members of monitoring teams for overseeing the exercise.
Otti formally accepted his nomination and congratulated all candidates who emerged from the primaries. He said the successful conduct of the exercise demonstrated the Labour Party’s ability to manage its internal processes without rancour or violence.
The governor attributed the peaceful outcome to efforts by party leaders who worked to resolve disagreements and build consensus across constituencies ahead of the primaries.
He urged candidates not to view their emergence as the end of the political process but as the beginning of a campaign to engage voters ahead of the general election. Otti encouraged them to reach beyond party supporters and persuade undecided voters to support Labour Party candidates at the polls.
He also expressed confidence in the party’s electoral prospects, saying participation in the primaries reflected growing grassroots support and enthusiasm among members across Abia State.
