Motilinah Mpofu and Christopher Ncube were convicted on Thursday of concealing a death after they allegedly dug a grave for their child in the dead of night. The Gaborone court heard the child had died suddenly. Instead of reporting the death to police, health officials, or traditional leaders, the couple quietly buried the youngster and hoped no one would find out. But the secret did not stay buried for long.   Police moved in and arrested the pair. In sentencing, the court ordered that the couple be taken to the Plumtree Border Post for deportation to Zimbabwe.  Top Botswana lawyer Winnie Masitha who offered the couple free legal representation during the trial, confirmed the deportation to BTV News.  Defence Minister Commends DSS DG As He Commissions Kaduna Christian Academy

Residents of Ungwan Bulus in Sabon Tasha, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, gathered in large numbers as the newly established Kaduna Christian Academy was officially commissioned.

The commissioning ceremony was performed by the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa, who described education as a vital tool for shaping future leaders and promoting national development.

Speaking at the event, the minister commended the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, for investing in the education sector through the establishment of the academy. He noted that providing a conducive learning environment for children would contribute significantly to nation-building and the development of future generations.

Musa also emphasized that effective internal security depends largely on winning the confidence and support of the people. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government to tackling banditry, insurgency, and other security challenges across the country.

The minister further commended Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, for what he described as inclusive governance and the ongoing developmental projects across the state.

In his welcome address, Chairman of the Northern Christian Association, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, described the commissioning of the academy as a historic moment for the community and the state.

According to him, the institution represents the fulfilment of a long-held vision aimed at addressing educational challenges and creating opportunities for children regardless of their background.

“We are here to affirm a simple but powerful truth that education is not a privilege reserved for a few, but a sacred right belonging to every child,” Hayab stated.

He lauded the DSS Director-General for what he described as a legacy project that goes beyond philanthropy, saying Ajayi had chosen to invest in the future of generations yet unborn.

“On behalf of the Northern Christian Association and the entire Christian community across Kaduna State, we offer our deepest appreciation. May God reward you richly and continually strengthen you for greater service to humanity,” he said.

Hayab also emphasized the importance of unity, noting that education remains a bridge that brings people together irrespective of religious, ethnic, or social differences. He urged residents of Ungwan Bulus to take ownership of the institution and ensure its protection and sustainability.

He further called on well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the gesture by investing in education, describing it as one of the most enduring tools for peace, progress, and national transformation.

Chairman of Chikun Local Government Area, Engr. Salasi, expressed gratitude to God for the successful commissioning of the institution and thanked the DSS Director-General for choosing Chikun as the location for the project.

Similarly, the Esu Chikun, Yarison Yari, described the academy as a laudable initiative and urged Christian leaders to ensure that the institution serves all Christian denominations without discrimination.

President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Israel Akanji, highlighted the role of Christian education in shaping responsible citizens and producing notable leaders. He noted that many distinguished Nigerians were products of Christian educational institutions and expressed optimism that Kaduna Christian Academy would contribute positively to society.

Representing the Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kaduna, Rev. Fr. Nandem praised the donors and stakeholders behind the project, describing the academy as an initiative capable of fostering unity among Christians and promoting community development.

Governor Uba Sani, represented by Kaduna State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Sir James A. Kanyip, underscored the importance of education in reducing crime and social vices.

According to him, educating and engaging young people helps steer them away from idleness and criminal activities while instilling values that make them productive members of society.

Kanyip assured that the Kaduna State Government remains open to partnerships with non-governmental organizations and groups willing to contribute to the state’s development through impactful projects.

He urged the management, staff, and host community to safeguard the institution, describing it as a legacy project designed to nurture future leaders and contribute to the socio-economic development of Kaduna State.

The colourful event attracted Christians from various denominations, including members of the Catholic Church, the Nigerian Baptist Convention, and the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA).

Musical performances by church choirs and women’s groups added excitement to the ceremony and kept participants entertained throughout the event.
