Don't Call Me 'Sis' or 'Hun': Toke Makinwa Sets Strict Boundaries on Terms of Endearment

Popular Nigerian media personality and lifestyle entrepreneur Toke Makinwa has sparked widespread online debate after establishing firm boundaries regarding how acquaintances and fans should address her. The television host warned the public, particularly those significantly younger than her, against using overly familiar terms of endearment when they share no personal relationship.

The Catalyst: The Viral 'Good Morning Tony' Controversy

Makinwa’s public warning came in the wake of the viral 'Good Morning Tony' social media trend, which has dominated discussions across Nigeria regarding workplace etiquette, respect, and communication boundaries. Seizing the moment, Makinwa addressed her own pet peeves concerning how people communicate with her online and offline.

Why Toke Makinwa Rejects 'Sis' and 'Hun'

Taking to her social media platform, the media star expressed a strong aversion to words like 'dear,' 'love,' 'hun,' and especially 'sis.' According to Makinwa, these seemingly affectionate terms are often used insincerely and can sometimes precede hostile behavior.

"Sis irritates me because first they call you sis, and next they are the opposition," Makinwa explained. She urged individuals she is not close with to "keep that" and resist using affectionate labels altogether.

She emphasized that age and familiarity play a significant role in how she expects to be addressed, advising younger people with whom she has no prior relationship to maintain a polite and respectful distance.

Preferring Simple, Direct Communication

For those unsure of how to approach her, Makinwa clarified that she does not require traditional respect-based titles common in Nigerian culture, such as 'Aunty.' Instead, she prefers a simple, polite greeting or just her first name.

"A polite hello is fine. You can even call me by my name because everyone knows I’m not hung up on 'Aunty' or 'Sis'," she added.

Her remarks have triggered a broader conversation across social media platforms, with many users debating the balance between modern communication trends, traditional respect, and personal boundaries.
