JAMB explains ‘not admitted’, ‘admission in progress’ statuses

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has explained the meanings of the “Not Admitted,” “Admission in Progress” and “Admitted” statuses displayed on candidates’ Central Admissions Processing System.

JAMB gave the explanation in an explainer video shared on Thursday, urging candidates to continue checking their CAPS for updates as the admission process progresses.

Explaining the “Not Admitted” status, the Board said, “This simply means you’ve not been offered admission yet. However, it does not necessarily mean you will not be admitted.”

It advised candidates whose status remained “Not Admitted” to keep checking their CAPS for possible updates.

The Board also explained that “Admission in Progress” could indicate that an institution had proposed a candidate for admission but the process was yet to be completed.

“This means your institution’s admission officer has proposed you for admission, but awaiting the head of institution’s recommendation,” JAMB said.

It added that the status could also apply where the head of an institution had recommended a candidate but the admission was still awaiting JAMB’s approval or disapproval.

JAMB, however, cautioned candidates against assuming that the status meant they had secured admission.

“Please note that ‘Admission in Progress’ does not mean automatic admission,” the Board said.

It explained that a recommended offer could still be rejected if a candidate failed to meet the required conditions.

“This is because the recommended offer could still be disapproved by the Board if you don’t meet the prerequisite requirements,” JAMB stated.

According to the Board, a candidate’s status becomes “Admitted” after JAMB officially approves the admission offer.

“This is the point you get the message, ‘CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED ADMISSION’,” it said.

JAMB said candidates who receive the admission offer would then be able to accept or reject it through CAPS.

The Board further noted that a candidate’s CAPS status could change as the admission process continued.

“Remember, your CAPS status will keep changing as the admission process continues until the final stage where you print your admission letter,” it said.

JAMB advised candidates to continue checking their CAPS and rely on its official channels for verified information on the admission process.
