LASG ENGAGES VOLUNTARY UNIFORM ORGANISATIONS ON STRENGTHENING DISCIPLINE, PARTNERSHIP IN LAGOS PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, alongside the Director of Co- Curricular, Mrs. Oluyemisi Adebesin and her team, held an interactive session with the five approved voluntary uniform organisations operating in Lagos State public schools, with a call for stronger coordination, collaboration and partnership towards improving the moral, social and leadership development of students.
The meeting, which brought together the team leads and representatives of the five approved organisations, was held on Thursday, 10th September, 2026, in the conference room of the office and provided an opportunity to deliberate on ways to strengthen the activities and impact of voluntary uniform organisations in schools across the State.
One of the major issues discussed was the need for better coordination of the activities of the voluntary organisations. It was proposed that each organisation should develop a harmonised annual calendar of activities for its Lagos State branch and submit it to the Ministry for approval. This, it was noted, would eliminate the need for different chapters to submit separate requests for each activity and would enable the Ministry to have a coordinated overview of their programmes throughout the academic year.
She stressed the importance of ensuring that activities of the organisations are properly coordinated and aligned with the educational objectives of the state.
It was also agreed that there would be no use of school premises for activities except the Wednesday Co-Curricular activities approved by the State.
Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite discussed the need to restore discipline, integrity, good morals, academic performance, and positive values among students, particularly those virtues for which previous generations of young people were known. "We want all-round students," she concluded.
The session also emphasised the important role voluntary uniform organisations can play in instilling discipline, responsibility, patriotism, teamwork, leadership, integrity, peace, and respect for constituted authority among young people, as stated in their mottos.
In addition, she encouraged the organisations to explore alternative venues, including parks and gardens, for suitable outdoor activities rather than relying solely on school classrooms and facilities.
The meeting further highlighted the need for the organisations to broaden their partnership with the Lagos State Government. She acknowledged that the government can not accomplish every aspect of youth development alone and that strategic collaboration with credible organisations can contribute significantly to achieving the State's educational and youth-development objectives.
A major highlight of the interactive session was the presentation of a proposal to the Ministry on how to sustain voluntary uniform organisations in Lagos State. The proposal, which was presented by the team lead of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Mr. Lasisi Olakunle outlined possible approaches to strengthening the sustainability, effectiveness, and continued relevance of uniform organisations in the State's public schools.
The Permanent Secretary commended the organisations for their contributions to the development of students and expressed her willingness to see greater collaboration between the organisations and the Lagos State Government.
She noted that such partnership would provide an opportunity to harness the strengths and expertise of the organisations in supporting the government's efforts to raise responsible, disciplined, and morally upright young people.
The session concluded with a shared commitment by the stakeholders to strengthen coordination and deepen collaboration in contributing to the overall development of students in Lagos State public schools.
The five approved uniform organisations are: Boys Scout led by the Chaplain, Rev. Doctor Olurotimi Taiwo; Girls Guides, Mrs. Efunuga Titilayo; Red Cross, Mr. Lasisi Olakunle; Brigade, Mrs. Okanlawon Omobolanle; and Sheriff Guards, Mrs. Adeleke Ibidunni.
