 TEAM LAGOS EMERGES TOP AT 23RD NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL SOUTH WEST ELIMINATION Lagos State athletes proved their dominance in the South West by edging out regional competitors and emerging top in the five team events contested at the elimination series qualifier for the 23rd National Sports Festival later this year in Enugu. The elimination series featured team events in volleyball, basketball, football, beach volleyball, and cricket in male and female categories. While the team clinched only the female football ticket by topping their group, they showed dominance in three other sports by winning both the male and female tickets. Team Lagos took first position in the volleyball male and female categories. The male team defeated their counterparts from Ondo in the finals by 25-18, 24-26, 25-20, and 25-20, while the female team defeated Team Oyo by 25-18, 22-25, 28-26, 16-25, and 15-8.  Prince Harry made a surprise appearance on the red carpet at TIME's 100 Most Influential People in Sports event, where he shared a light-hearted moment with photographers before speaking about the work behind the Invictus Games. As he arrived at Thursday's event, the Duke of Sussex joked with photographers, telling them they were "the most polite" photographers he had ever met. Harry was recognised by TIME for his role in founding the Invictus Games, the international sporting competition for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and military veterans. Speaking about the origins of the event, Harry said the idea came after attending the U.S. Olympic Committee's Warrior Games in 2013.  TROOPS FOIL BANDITS ATTACK, RECOVER 97 CATTLE AND 50 SHEEP IN KANO Troops of the Joint Task Force Kano, deployed at Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) reinforced  by troops from a Response Area, have successfully foiled  bandits attack and prevented the rustling of livestock in Yankamaye, Rimaye axis along the boundry between Kano and Katsina States. Acting on credible intelligence on 15 July 2026 at about 1745,  that armed bandits were moving rustled livestock around Yankamaye and  Rimaye general area. Troops deployed at  FOBs  and Response Area, swiftly positioned themselves at various bandits crossing points, where they intercepted the fleeing bandits. During the ensuing exchange of gunfire,  troops overwhelmed the bandits, forcing them to abandon the rustled livestock and flee in total disarray towards Katsina State.  20 children killed in Uganda school bus crash A bus full of schoolchildren returning from a trip veered off the road in Uganda, killing 20 children and one adult, police said Friday. "Sadly, 20 children and 1 adult, who happens to be the founder and director, Mr Tadeo Ssekade, have gone to be with the Lord," Minister of Local Government, Balaam Ateenyi Barugahara, posted on X while at the scene. The bus from King David Junior School in the capital, Kampala, was returning from a school trip to Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa District when it veered off the road, according to preliminary investigations by the police. "The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road, struck a large stone along the roadside, and overturned," police said in a statement on X, TRT Afrika reported. “We found 9 children in critical condition,” Minister Barugahara added on X.  Anambra Reaffirms Ban on Unapproved Textbooks, Compulsory School Levies By MaryAnn Chukwuma  The Anambra State Government has directed schools not to change prescribed textbooks without the approval of the Ministry of Education and reaffirmed the ban on compulsory graduation ceremonies and levies imposed on parents. The directives are contained in a circular dated July 15, issued by the Ministry of Education and signed by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua. According to the circular, schools are prohibited from replacing approved textbooks without prior approval from the ministry to ensure uniformity in learning materials across educational institutions. The ministry also directed schools not to prescribe textbooks containing printed assignments, exercises or activities that render them unusable by other learners, saying the measure is intended to encourage the reuse of books and reduce the financial burden on parents.
