 Convicted war criminal Lubanga announces new rebel group in east Congo A convicted war criminal based in Uganda has announced a new rebel movement intent on toppling the government in eastern Congo's Ituri province, creating another potential security threat in the war-scarred region, Reuters reported. The formation of the Convention for the Popular Revolution (CPR) by Thomas Lubanga, an Ituri native, comes as Congo's army faces an unprecedented advance by Rwandan-backed M23 rebels elsewhere in eastern Congo. The International Criminal Court secured its first conviction against Lubanga in 2012 on charges of recruiting child soldiers and sentenced him to 14 years in prison. He was released in 2020 and President Felix Tshisekedi appointed him to a task force to bring peace to Ituri. But in 2022 he was taken hostage for two months by a rebel group, which he blames on the government, and is now based in Uganda.        Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the reliance on litigation in the resolution of electoral issues is symptomatic of the failure of the electoral process.
Delivering a keynote address at the conference of the Democratic Process and Electoral Litigation Committee of the Section on Legal Practice, at the NBA House on Monday, Governor Wike said that litigation remains a powerful tool for the assertion of political rights.
He said: "The Electoral process is a serious matter of concern to the citizenry. I regret that INEC and security agencies negatively affect the electoral process.
"Post election matters for redress maybe symptomatic of the prevalence of perceived grievances with the electoral process.
"The way to forestall rampant electoral litigation is not by constricting the right of access to the court as being advocated in some quarters, but rather strengthen the Democratic institutions to engender transparency and respect for the rule of law in the Democratic Process. "
The governor urged lawyers to up their game in using litigation to enhance credible electoral process.
Governor Wike said that litigation has made it possible for the political parties to account for their actions.
He said that the impartiality of the security agencies especially the police is needed for credible elections in 2019. According to him, the partisanship of the police ruined the credibility of the Osun Polls.
He urged civil service organisations to prevail on INEC and security agencies to be impartial.
He said: "It is our collective responsibility to protect the nation's democracy. I urge Nigerians to be vigilant and seek credible polls ."
National President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr Paul Usoro (SAN) represented by the Secretary General of NBA, Mr Jonathan Tilde said electoral litigation has come to stay as a means for resolving electoral conflicts.
Chairman of Democratic Process and Electoral Litigation Committee, Chief Ferdinand Orbih ( SAN) lauded the Rivers State Governor for his commitment to electoral reforms through the support for NBA programmes.
Bayelsa State Chief Judge, Justice Kate Abiri said that the litigation can be minimised where the elections are free and fair.
Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Adama Iyaye-Laminkanra said politicians should always seek redress rather than disrupt the electoral process .
The event attracted prominent lawyers from across the country including the Governor of Ondo State, Chief Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN)

 Actor Baba Ijesha appeals five-year jail sentence for sexual assault Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, known as Baba Ijesha, has filed an appeal against his conviction for the sexual assault of a minor. He has requested the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, to overturn the ruling of the Lagos State High Court, which sentenced him to five years in prison. The conviction was handed down by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo (retd.) of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on July 14, 2022 to Baba Ijesha. Baba Ijesha through his counsel Kayode Olabiran on Tuesday, told the appeal court that his client was set up and that he acted according to a script that he was invited to act on by his colleague. “The Appellant was set up.
