Benue State acting governor, Engr Benson Abounu has directed the State Water Board to carry out immediate repairs of all faulty parts of the old Otobi Water Works to enable the station resume treatment of water and pumping of same to residents of Otukpo and its environs.
Engr Abounu, who gave the order today at Otobi while on an assessment visit to the Water Works expressed unhappiness that little problems that could have easily been handled by those in charge were left to fester, leading to the breakdown of vital equipment and the disruption of service delivery to the people. He explained that since the Chinese contractors that built the digitalised new Otobi Water Works have locked up the place and refused to operate it on very tenuous reasons, it behooves on the government to resuscitate the old water works, which had faithfully served the people over the years, so that the problem of acute water shortage can be addressed.
The acting governor, who was accompanied by the Commissioner of Water Resources and Environment, Hon. Aarga Shiaondo, and members of the State Executive Council frowned at the attention given to selling of water in tankers to water merchants while ignoring the water needs of the ordinary people on the streets.
The General Manager, Benue State Water Board, Michael Dzungu, and top officials of the Board conducted the acting governor round the facilities, during which they identified the faulty facilities and the steps to take to restore water supply to Otukpo.
Engr Abounu enthused that the resuscitation of the old waterworks and the resolution of the issues behind the non-operation of the new waterworks would usher in a new era of water availability in Otukpo and its environs.More photos below.
