 Former Bank of China chairman sentenced to death on corruption charges Liu Liange, former Party chief and chairman of Bank of China, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve in a first-instance trial on Tuesday for accepting large sums in bribes. The sentence was delivered by the Jinan Intermediate People's Court in East China's Shandong Province, according to China Central Television (CCTV). During his tenure from 2010 to 2023, Liu took bribes of 121 million yuan ($16.7 million) to assist with loans, projects, and personnel arrangements. He approved illegal loans amounting to 3.32 billion yuan from 2017 to 2020, causing losses of over 190.7 million yuan. Liu was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, stripped of his political rights for life and had all personal assets seized.  Again, Police arrest singer, Speed Darlington


Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested a Nigerian musician, Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, in Owerri, the Imo State capital.


Counsel for the singer and Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the development in a post on his official X page on Wednesday.


Adeyanju stated that his client was arrested while performing at a show in Owerri, days after returning to the country earlier in the week.


He wrote, “Our client, Speed Darlington, a.k.a AKPI, has been arrested by the Nigeria Police in Owerri at his show upon return to Nigeria.”


However, the reason for the singer’s arrest remains unclear at the time of filing this report.


The Nigeria Police had arrested Darlington over alleged cyberstalking of a fellow musician, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy.


The singer was arrested in Lagos and transferred to Abuja before being detained by the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team in the Guzape area of Abuja.


The musician, who was accused of cyberstalking Burna Boy, was released on bail days after his arrest.

  SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff.
