UNICEF warns about escalating crisis in eastern Congo, urges global action UNICEF has urged the international community not to remain indifferent to the worsening situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where fighting between government forces and the March 23 Movement (M23) rebel group continues to endanger millions. Spokesperson James Elder emphasized to Anadolu that the crisis will deepen unless addressed through political engagement and financial support. Elder, who recently spent one week in Goma, in the east of that country, described the region as facing a near “disaster” due to the Mpox virus outbreak combined with violence. “UNICEF and partners were rushing to support across the region to ensure it just did not spread further.  Boundary Dispute: Abia Community Protests Akwa Ibom's Road Construction

Residents of Azumini Ndoki in Abia State took to the streets on Monday to protest the Akwa Ibom State government's road construction project in their community, alleging that it's being carried out without a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two states.¹

The protesters claimed that the project, which connects Ikot Esu-Otomo in Akwa-Ibom State to Uzonta road in Azumini Ndoki, is an attempt by the Akwa-Ibom State government to expand its territory and encroach on Abia State's land. Community leaders, including Ogbo Ubani and Azubuike Nwankwo, condemned Akwa-Ibom State's actions, citing the community's long-standing boundary dispute.

The protesters also expressed concerns that the Akwa-Ibom State government is revoking properties in Abia State and paying compensation, which they believe is the responsibility of the Abia State government. They demanded an immediate halt to the project until an MoU is signed between the two states.

In response, the Mayor of Ukwa-East, Chibunna Akara, urged the community to remain calm and promised to convey their concerns to Governor Alex Otti for a peaceful resolution.
